In a significant and groundbreaking announcement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ushered in a new era for Indian Women’s cricket by appointing former cricketer Amol Muzumdar as the head coach of the national team.

Following a meticulous selection process, the Cricket Advisory Committee, composed of Ms. Sulakshana Naik, Mr. Ashok Malhotra, and Mr. Jatin Paranjape, conducted interviews with the candidates vying for the prestigious position of Head Coach for Team India (Senior Women). After extensive and considered deliberation, the committee unanimously put forth the recommendation that Muzumdar be entrusted with this vital role.

Amol Muzumdar: A domestic cricket legend

A true domestic cricket luminary, Muzumdar amassed an impressive total of more than 11,000 first-class runs across 171 matches, an incredible feat that included a remarkable 30 centuries throughout his illustrious 21-year career. His influence extended beyond the first-class format, as he made significant contributions in over 100 List A matches and 14 T20 fixtures. Notably, the Mumbai-born cricketer was pivotal in securing multiple Ranji Trophy titles with the powerhouse Mumbai team before further enriching his cricket journey with stints representing Assam and Andhra Pradesh.

Muzumdar’s remarks after his appointment

Muzumdar expressed his deep honour and privilege in taking on this role. He acknowledged the trust placed in him by the CAC and the BCCI and outlined his vision and roadmap for Team India.

“I am deeply honoured and privileged to be appointed as the Head Coach of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team. I thank the CAC and the BCCI for placing their trust in me and believing in my vision and the roadmap for Team India,” said Muzumdar as quoted by BCCI.

The 48-year-old further emphasized the significant responsibility and the importance of the upcoming two years, which will include two World Cups, and expressed his commitment to working closely with the talented players, providing them with the necessary guidance and preparation to achieve success alongside the coaching and support staff.

This is a huge responsibility and I look forward to working closely with talented players and providing them with the right preparation and guidance to excel. The next two years are extremely important as two World Cups are scheduled in the period. Together with the coaching and support staff, we will look to tick every box and give ourselves the best chance to succeed.” he added.
