Indian star Jemimah Rodrigues played her first game in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) took on Delhi Capitals (DC) in the second match of the competition at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
Jemimah, while representing Delhi, smashed an unbeaten 22 off 15 balls, including 3 fours during DC’s massive total of 223/2 in their allotted 20 overs. Explosive opener Shafali Verma and captain Meg Lanning did the maximum damage as the duo put together an opening stand of 161 runs.
While Lanning smashed 72 from 43 balls, featuring 14 boundaries, Shafali scored 84 off 45 deliveries, with the help of 10 fours and 4 sixes. After posting an enormous total on the board, Delhi restricted the Smriti Mandhana-led Bangalore at 163/8 in 20 overs to win the match by 60 runs.
Ahead of the high-voltage clash, Jemimah’s parents expressed their excitement of their daughter’s debut. During a discussion on Sports18, the cricketer’s parents were filled with pride as their daughter was set to embark upon a new journey. They even recalled the moment when Jemimah’s name was called out during the auction held in December, last year.
“I feel like every parent out there would like to be in our boots right now. Just thankful to God for giving her this moment, and you want to cherish it,” said Jemimah’s mother, Lavita.
“I’m quite thrilled. I don’t know what to express. My tears might roll down my cheeks. We had gone to South Africa to see India’s matches, and we were seeing it live. During the auction day, Hotstar wasn’t there. So, I told my friends and brother-in-law down here to put it on zoom, so we were tuned on our tab live,” stated Jemimah’s father, Ivan.
