India created history by clinching the inaugural U19 Women’s T20 World Cup on Sunday, January 29. The Women in Blue achieved the feat by defeating England in the final at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.

Notably, it was the first time that the International Cricket Council (ICC) had organized a women’s U19 cricketing world cup event, where a total of 16 countries took part and India, New Zealand, Australia, and England were the four nations to make it to the semis.

India faced New Zealand in the semi-final and registered a dominating eight-wicket victory to sail to the final. On the other hand, England defeated Australia in a low-scoring thriller by three runs to make their way to the ultimate championship battle.

In the summit clash, India opted to bowl first and restricted England to mere 68 runs and then went on to chase the set target in 14 overs with seven wickets in hand.

Wishes and congratulatory messages poured for the champions from every corner. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also acknowledged the team’s efforts by announcing a massive INR 5 crore reward.

Jay Shah, the secretary of BCCI, took to Twitter and declared the prize money for the victorious U19 Women’s squad with an appreciation note.

“Women’s Cricket in India is on the upswing and the World Cup triumph has taken the stature of women’s cricket several notches higher. I am delighted to announce INR 5 crore for the entire team and support staff as prize money. This is surely a path-breaking year,” Shah tweeted after India’s victory.

Shah also invited Shafali Verma and her side to the Narendra Modi Stadium to celebrate the triumph and witness the T20I series decider between India and New Zealand Men’s teams.

“I invite @TheShafaliVerma and her victorious team to join us at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad and witness the third T20I on February 1. This humongous achievement surely calls for a celebration,” he added.
