India faced New Zealand in the semi-final of the inaugural Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Friday, January 27.

India won the toss and chose to bowl first. The Women in Blue restricted the White Ferns to a below-par score of 107-9 in 20 overs. Georgia Plimmer (35) and Isabella Gaze (26) contributed to the team’s total. Meanwhile, Parshavi Chopra took three wickets for India. Shafali Verma also took one wicket in her quota of 4 overs and gave away just seven runs.

In response, India started their innings well and took away the game from New Zealand within 14.2 overs courtesy of Shweta Sehrawat’s brilliant 61-run knock. Shweta smashed ten boundaries in her innings to guide India to register an eight-wicket victory. Soumya Tiwari also played solid innings of 22 off 26 balls. On the other hand, Anna Browning was the only bowler for New Zealand to pick up wickets.

India has secured their spot in the tournament’s final with this win. They will face either Australia or England in the final match, which will take place on Sunday, January 29.

Under Shafali’s leadership, India would now be looking to win the championship and create history. Notably, it is for the first time that ICC has organized an Under-19 World Cup event for Women.

Love and wishes from fans on social media poured in for the Indian team soon after they defeated the Kiwis and sealed their spot into the final.
