Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, who was tested positive for coronavirus, passed away on Monday (August 31) at the age of 84. Seven-days state mourning is observed in the entire nation to grieve his demise.

Pranab’s son, Abhjijeet Mukherjee broke the news with a tweet that read: “With a Heavy Heart , this is to inform you that my father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away inspite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital and prayers, duas and prarthanas from people throughout India ! I thank all of You.”

Hailing from a small town in West Bengal, Mukherjee established himself as one of the most accomplished statesmen. He served as a Member of Parliament seven times and was a cabinet minister under numerous prime ministers. In 2012, he was elected the President of India for a term of five years.

Cricketers mourn the demise of Mukherjee

Many cricketers, including Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, flocked to social media to pay their last respect to the leader.

Mithali, India ODI captain, took to Twitter and wrote: “Deeply saddened by the loss of our Former President of India and Bharat Ratna Sri #PranabMukherjeeJi . Still vividly remember receiving my Padma Shri from him in 2015. #etchedinourhearts”

“Really saddened to hear that former president, Bharat Ratan #PranabMukherjee sir is no more with us. Thank you for your service to the nation. May his soul rest in peace. @POI13,” wrote Goswami.

Harmanpreet Kaur, India T20 skipper, too thanked the former President for his contribution to the nation.

“The death of Shri Pranab Mukherjee is a big loss for the nation. May his soul #RIP. I pray that god gives his family strength in their time of grief,” penned Harmanpreet.

Veda Krishnamurthy tweeted: “A great leader and wonderful human being. May you rest in peace Shri Pranab Mukherjee. My condolences to your loved ones and family.”
