West Indies secured a resounding eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh, at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday. It was a one-sided affair as the Caribbean side displayed their class in all departments at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Deandra Dottin’s blistering finishing touch to seal the game

West Indies’ chase got off to a flying start, with openers Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor putting on a 52-run partnership. Matthews, in particular, was in fine form, scoring 34 runs off just 22 balls. Unfortunately, Taylor was forced to retire hurt due to a knee injury, but her contribution was crucial in setting the platform for the chase.

Shemaine Campbelle played a quickfire knock of 21 runs from 16 balls, providing the necessary momentum. However, it was Deandra Dottin‘s finishing prowess that stole the show, as she remained unbeaten on 19 runs from seven balls, including two sixes.

The match-winning shot came from the bat of all-rounder Dottin against Bangladeshi spinner Rabeya Khatun. In the 13th over, with Bangladesh hoping for a late comeback, Dottin stepped up and launched a powerful slog sweep over deep mid-wicket. The six sealed the deal for West Indies, leaving them with 43 balls to spare.

Karishma Ramharack’s bowling heroics against the hosts

West Indies’ bowling attack was equally impressive, with off-spinner Karishma Ramharack leading the way. Ramharack picked up four wickets, including the crucial dismissals of Shathi Rani and Dilara Akter. Her ability to control the run flow and strike at regular intervals was instrumental in restricting Bangladesh to a below-par total of 103 runs.

Bangladesh batters struggles against West Indies’ bowling unit

Bangladesh’s batting lineup failed to fire on all cylinders. Despite a decent damage control from Sobhana Mostary and captain Nigar Sultana, the team’s middle order collapsed, losing wickets at regular intervals. The West Indies bowlers, with their disciplined line and length, made it difficult for the Bangladeshi batters to score freely.

Overall, West Indies’ victory was a complete performance. Their batting was solid, their bowling was disciplined, and their fielding was impeccable. The win has solidified their position at the top of Group B for now and puts them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages if South Africa face a loss. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will need to regroup and improve their performance in their remaining matches.
