Northern Superchargers Women secured a thrilling victory over Manchester Originals Women in a fiercely contested Northern derby at Headingley on Sunday, August 4. The home side’s second win in four matches at The Hundred was highlighted by a sensational fielding effort from Alice Davidson-Richards.

Alice Davidson-Richards’ spectacle stuns Manchester Originals

Batting first, Northern Superchargers posted a respectable total of 138-4, with Annabel Sutherland and Phoebe Litchfield contributing 44 and 43 runs respectively. Lauren Filer, the England pace bowler, impressed with figures of 2-16 for the Originals.

In reply, Manchester Originals got off to a promising start, but the loss of key batters Laura Wolvaardt and Beth Mooney within the powerplay shifted momentum in favor of the Superchargers. Kate Cross was the standout bowler, claiming four wickets and dismantling the Originals’ batting order.

The match reached its climax in the 67th ball when Fritha Morris mistimed a shot, only to find Davidson-Richards lurking at short third man. The fielder produced a breathtaking catch, plucking the ball out of thin air to send Morris back to the pavilion. This pivotal moment proved to be a turning point, as the Originals were unable to recover from the loss of their key batters.

The Superchargers’ bowling attack, spearheaded by Cross, dismantled the Originals’ batting lineup, with five different bowlers contributing to the wicket tally. Ultimately, the home side secured a comfortable victory, moving up the points table.

“It was a complete team performance out there”: Annabel Sutherland

In the post-match presentation, Player of the Match Annabel Sutherland said: “It was a complete team performance out there. I thought we did a really good job with the bat. We came out hard on a very good wicket, and the bowlers got the job done.

“It felt like a good wicket, you could hit through the line of the ball and trust your swing. Our bowlers also made it look like there was more in it than there was, so I’m really proud of the group.

“At half-time I thought we might be a little bit under par, just because it was such a good wicket, but we felt it was defendable with how we usually bowl in the powerplay, which we did well again today.”
