England Women have faced a challenging period, marked by a group-stage exit at last year’s T20 World Cup and a comprehensive 16-0 Ashes whitewash against Australia Women over the winter.

England’s recent struggles and Charlotte Edwards’ new role

These setbacks prompted a significant change, leading to the appointment of former captain Charlotte Edwards as head coach. While Edwards’ tenure began promisingly with a clean sweep against the West Indies, England have since found itself trailing 2-1 in the ongoing T20 series against India Women, indicating the road to recovery is still underway.

Ellyse Perry’s endorsement for Charlotte Edwards

Despite England’s recent form, Australian cricketing icon Ellyse Perry, widely regarded as one of the sport’s all-time greats, remains steadfast in her belief that Edwards will soon have the team performing at its peak. Perry, who played under Edwards at Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL), points to Edwards’ extensive and successful coaching career. Edwards has guided teams to multiple titles, including triumphs with Southern Vipers, Southern Brave in The Hundred and Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

When quizzed about Edwards’ consistent success, Perry lauded her former coach’s profound understanding of the game. “She just intuitively knows the game inside out. Her ability to impart her knowledge and wisdom on to players across the spectrum is probably unparalleled,” Perry stated to PA NEw Agency. She further emphasized Edwards’ dedication, adding, “What people don’t see is just how bloody hard she works. I don’t know a coach that is more invested in what she’s doing than Lottie. It’s not a surprise she’s had success.”

Perry, an eight-time World Cup winner, is currently playing for Hampshire, where she has even benefited from Edwards’ absence by staying in her seaside apartment.
