England’s women’s cricket team faces a critical juncture after suffering consecutive defeats against India in the ongoing T20I series, putting them on the brink of a historic home series loss. Following their 24-run defeat in Bristol, former England captain Heather Knight has publicly urged for immediate changes to the playing XI, specifically advocating for the inclusion of off-spinning all-rounder Charlie Dean to counter India’s star opener, Smriti Mandhana.
Knight, currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury, expressed concern over England’s bowling performance, particularly during the Powerplay overs where Mandhana has been most impactful.
Knight calls for Charlie Dean’s inclusion
“Charlie Dean is one of your best five bowlers and she needs to play,” Knight told Sky Sports. “She is a brilliant match-up against Smriti Mandhana with a real good strike rate in the past in the Powerplay taking wickets and she is great in the field, so I imagine Charlie Dean will come in. For me she would have started the series as she is an exceptional player.”
Mandhana, India’s dynamic left-handed opener, has been instrumental in providing her team with strong starts, capitalizing on the Powerplay with her aggressive stroke play. England’s bowling attack has struggled to contain her, with left-arm spinner Linsey Smith going wicketless in the first two matches. Knight believes Dean’s off-spin and tactical acumen make her the ideal candidate to disrupt Mandhana’s rhythm early in the innings.
Knight elaborated on potential team changes, suggesting Dean could directly replace Smith, who hasn’t replicated her recent form from the West Indies series. “She has looked vulnerable, she probably hasn’t changed pace as much as conditions warranted and she hasn’t been quite as accurate as she was in the West Indies,” Knight observed. She also raised the possibility of resting a seamer to accommodate Dean, depending on the team’s preferred balance.
Do-or-die situation for England
The urgency of the situation is amplified by the series context. England, trailing 0-2 in the five-match series, risks their first bilateral T20I series defeat at home since 2023. Knight’s comments reflect not just tactical adjustments but a plea to restore confidence and competitiveness against a surging Indian side. “You can’t feel sorry for yourself… Yes we can improve on this, yes we can do this better and they will try and build that confidence back up,” she said, urging the team to maintain a positive mindset.
The third T20I, scheduled for Friday at The Oval, now holds immense significance. All eyes will be on the England selectors to see if they heed Knight’s advice and bring Dean into the fold.
