In a significant move to promote women’s cricket across the country, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the 2025 season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be hosted across four venues. Speaking at a press conference following a Special General Meeting in Mumbai, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla confirmed the cities and the start date for the much-anticipated season.

Four venues to host WPL 2025 matches

The decision marks a major milestone in the evolution of women’s cricket in India. With the WPL gaining momentum since its inception, the BCCI’s commitment to expanding its reach is evident in the multi-venue approach for the upcoming season. After successful editions in Mumbai (2023) and Delhi-Bengaluru (2024), WPL 2025 will take the action to Mumbai, Lucknow, Bengaluru, and Vadodara, ensuring that fans in diverse regions can witness the excitement firsthand.

Summit clash to take place in Kotambi Stadium

The grand finale of WPL 2025 will be held at the newly-built Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. Located just 20 kilometers from the city center, the stadium recently made its international debut during the India Women’s ODI series against the West Indies. Known for its state-of-the-art facilities, Kotambi Stadium is currently hosting the knockout stages of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, further proving its capability to host high-profile matches.

The BCCI’s decision to include Vadodara as a key venue reflects the region’s growing support for cricket and its potential to become a hub for women’s sports.

Expanding horizons: Cities with passionate fan bases

The choice of Mumbai, Lucknow, Bengaluru, and Vadodara stems from the overwhelming support these cities have shown for the sport. Mumbai, the cradle of Indian cricket, has a rich legacy and an enthusiastic fanbase. Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium has become a standout venue for hosting matches in recent years. Bengaluru, with its cricket-loving crowd, has been pivotal in supporting the women’s game, while Vadodara is fast emerging as an important city for women’s cricket infrastructure.

Countdown to February 7

The WPL 2025 season is set to begin on February 7. While the detailed schedule and match allocation per venue are yet to be finalized, the multi-city format promises to bring the thrill of the league to fans across different regions.

The BCCI’s move aligns with its broader goal of developing women’s cricket as a mainstream sport. By hosting matches across four cities, the league not only aims to inspire budding talent but also to elevate the profile of women’s cricket in India and beyond.
