In an exhilarating Match 38 of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024 at the W.A.C.A. Ground, Hobart Hurricanes clinched a narrow 3-wicket victory against Perth Scorchers with 14 balls to spare.

Scorchers’ collapse after Sophie Devine’s dismissal

After electing to bat first, Perth Scorchers posted a modest total of 138 all out in 20 overs. Opener Beth Mooney anchored the innings with a gritty 50 off 40 balls, supported by Sophie Devine’s aggressive 28 off 22. Contributions from Brooke Halliday (21 off 16) and Maddy Darke (10 off 11) provided brief momentum, but regular wickets kept the Scorchers in check. Amy Smith was the pick of the bowlers for Hobart, delivering a phenomenal spell of 3/17, while Lauren Smith (2/24) and Nicola Carey (1/17) played crucial supporting roles.

Kathryn Bryce takes Hurricanes over the finish line

Chasing 139, Hobart Hurricanes faced early hiccups, losing key wickets, including captain Elyse Villani for 11. However, Lizelle Lee’s explosive 44 off 22 laid a strong foundation with seven fours and a six. Despite a middle-order collapse, Kathryn Bryce steered the chase with a composed 34 off 24, finding the gaps when it mattered. She along with Lauren Smith (16 not out) ensured the Hurricanes crossed the finish line at 139/7 in 17.4 overs.

Devine was exceptional with the ball for the Scorchers, bagging 4/26 in 4 overs to keep her side in contention. Chloe Ainsworth and Amy Edgar chipped in with a wicket apiece but couldn’t prevent Bryce’s steady march toward victory.
