The Boland Park in Paarl hosted two Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 matches on Monday (February 13). While England locked horns with arch-rivals Ireland in the first match, South Africa battled New Zealand in the second game.
In the Ireland vs England match, Ireland won the toss and elected to bat first. They got all out for just 105 in 18.2 overs, with Gaby Lewis scoring 36 and Orla Prendergast scoring 17. England’s Sarah Glenn and Sophie Ecclestone picked three wickets each, while Charlotte Dean claimed two scalps.
In response, England chased the set target in 14.2 overs, with Alice Capsey scoring 51 off 22 balls and Danielle Wyatt scoring 16 off 13 balls. Ireland’s Cara Murray grabbed three wickets.
England won the match by four wickets.
Capsey was awarded the Player of the Match award for her quickfire half-century. Speaking in the post-match presentation about her exploit, she said: “Loving it, to be able to play for England in a World Cup is pretty much the dream. (Gameplan) It’s clear, it’s to put pressure on the bowlers every single opportunity and the messaging we’ve had from Jon Lewis suits that and it’s been brilliant. There’s been no complains from my part, it’s been fitted into my game and I’m loving playing under him.”

Meanwhile, in the contest between South Africa and New Zealand, the Proteas won the toss and chose to bat first. They scored 132 runs for six wickets in 20 overs. Chloe Tryon was their top-scorer with 40 runs. New Zealand bowlers Eden Carson and Lea Tahuhu took two wickets each.
In reply, White Ferns managed to score only 67 runs in 18.1 overs, with captain Sophie Devine scoring 16 runs. Nonkululeko Mlaba scalped three wickets, while Tryon and Marizanne Kapp picked two wickets each.
South Africa won the encounter by 65 runs.
Tryon was adjudged ‘Player of the Match for her exceptional all-round performance. Following the win, she said: “After the first game, we knew this was do or die. We did the basics right and everything fell in place. We wanted it really badly, we have been working hard. I felt we were 15 runs short, but with the ball we were really sharp. I’m loving bowling, been doing it for a while and happy that we could get a win today.”
