South African women’s cricket star Dané van Niekerk has reversed her retirement decision, setting the stage for a much-awaited comeback to international cricket. Widely regarded as one of the game’s finest all-rounders, van Niekerk said her time away reignited her passion for wearing the national colours and reaffirmed her desire to represent South Africa at the highest level.

For the unversed, van Niekerk had previously called time from international cricket in March 2023 after being dropped from the Proteas squad for the T20 World Cup due to a failed fitness test.

I sincerely apologise to Cricket South Africa and the cricket family for how I handled my retirement, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to hopefully one day express my skills again on the international stage. I know the standards of the team and the women’s game continue to rise, and I am ready to work hard to meet them.
