West Indies Women finally broke the shackles in the opening game of the three-match ODI series against South Africa. After suffering a humiliating whitewash at the hands of England just a week ago, the Windies tasted a much-needed victory in a rain-affected contest at the Three Ws Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. The hosts showed renewed energy with both bat and ball, executing their plans with far more discipline and intent.
Lower order fightback lifts Proteas to competitive total
After being put in to bat first, the visitors got off to a promising start, with Tazmin Brits anchoring the innings with a composed half-century—scoring 57 runs off 65 deliveries. However, the momentum couldn’t be sustained as wickets began to tumble at regular intervals. A vital late partnership between Nadine de Klerk and Ayabonga Khaka, worth 60 runs off just 52 balls, helped South Africa recover and post a competitive total of 232.
For West Indies, Karishma Ramharack and Aaliyah Alleyne were the standout performers with the ball, claiming two wickets each. Their composed spells, marked by tight lines, clever variations, and consistent lengths, never allowed the Protea batters to settle or accelerate freely in the middle overs.
West Indies openers set the tone, rain alters the chase
Chasing a challenging total, the hosts got off to a fiery start, with openers Hayley Matthews and Qiana Joseph putting together a brisk 88-run stand off just 84 deliveries. Their aggressive approach gave West Indies early momentum, but a flurry of quick wickets soon placed the hosts on the back foot. However, rain intervened and revised the target to 180 runs in 34 overs via the DLS method. Stafanie Taylor remained composed under pressure, guiding her side home with a crucial 30-run knock.

For South Africa, Ayanda Hlubi picked up three vital wickets despite an expensive spell of 3 for 50 in 7 overs. Nonkululeko Mlaba and Chloe Tryon delivered tight, disciplined spells that kept the visitors in the contest for longer. Their smart variations, consistent lines, and ability to build pressure almost turned the tide, but lacked the final breakthrough.
