Adelaide Strikers have bolstered their Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) ambitions by re-signing South African captain and dynamic opening batter Laura Wolvaardt on a two-year contract, ensuring her presence in blue until the end of WBBL|12. The announcement, made ahead of the WBBL overseas draft, cements Wolvaardt’s status as the Strikers’ pre-draft overseas signing for the upcoming seasons.
A proven match-winner returns to Adelaide Strikers
Wolvaardt, 26, is widely regarded as one of the premier top-order batters in women’s T20 cricket. Since joining the Strikers five seasons ago, she has become a linchpin at the top of the order, amassing 1,726 runs from 71 matches at an average of 27.83 and a strike rate of 110.92. Her contributions were pivotal in Adelaide’s back-to-back championship triumphs in WBBL|08 and WBBL|09, and her leadership both on and off the field has been lauded by teammates and coaches alike.
Despite a challenging WBBL|10 campaign, in which the Strikers finished seventh with just three wins from ten matches, Wolvaardt remained a steady performer, scoring 193 runs in nine appearances at an average of 24.12. Her experience and composure under pressure are expected to be vital as the Strikers look to rebound in WBBL|11.
Expressing her delight at extending her stay, Wolvaardt – in her official statement – said: “The club has become a second home to me, and I’ve made so many incredible memories here, especially our back-to-back championship wins. While last season didn’t go as we hoped, I’m incredibly excited about the future and determined to help bring more success to the Strikers and our amazing fans. I can’t wait to get back to Adelaide with the team.”
“Her skill with the bat, combined with her leadership and experience, is invaluable”: Luke Williams
Strikers head coach Luke Williams emphasized the significance of securing Wolvaardt’s services ahead of the draft. “Laura is a world-class player and a vital part of the Strikers family, so we are ecstatic to have her sign on for two more years. Her skill with the bat, combined with her leadership and experience, is invaluable. She has consistently performed under pressure and played a huge role in our previous championship successes. We know she will be a key pillar for us as we build towards a strong WBBL|11 season and beyond,” Williams stated.
The WBBL allows each team to secure one overseas player before the annual draft, and with this pre-signing, the Strikers have ensured continuity and stability at the top of their order. The only WBBL team yet to announce a pre-draft overseas signing for 2025 is Melbourne Renegades.
