Cricket South Africa (CSA) have announced a formidable 16-member squad for their upcoming white-ball tour of the West Indies, marking the return of experienced all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, as well as seamers Tumi Sekhukhune and Ayanda Hlubi. The tour, which serves as a crucial preparation phase ahead of the Women’s ODI World Cup later this year, features three ODIs and three T20Is, all scheduled to be played at the Three Ws Oval in Barbados from June 11 to 23.

Marizanne Kapp returns after five-months break from international cricket

Kapp, a veteran campaigner and one of the world’s premier all-rounders, returns to international cricket after being rested for the recent tri-series in Sri Lanka. Her last appearance for South Africa came in the home series against England in December, and she has not played competitive cricket since the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in March. Kapp’s inclusion is expected to add significant depth and experience to the Proteas line-up as they fine-tune their combinations ahead of the World Cup.

Joining Kapp are Sekhukhune and Hlubi, both of whom missed the Sri Lanka tri-series. Their return bolsters South Africa’s pace attack, giving the squad seven fast-bowling options for the Caribbean conditions.

Selectors pick five spinners in the Proteas Women’s squad

The selectors have opted for a balanced squad, also retaining five spin-bowling options, led by left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba and supported by offspinner Nondumiso Shangase, seasoned all-rounders Chloe Tryon and Sune Luus, and promising 20-year-old Miane Smit, who could make her T20I debut after an impressive ODI debut in Sri Lanka.

Notably, top-order batter Lara Goodall and leg-spinner Seshnie Naidu have been left out of the squad, despite featuring in the Sri Lanka tri-series. Anneke Bosch remains unavailable as she continues her recovery from illness.

The ODI series against Hayley Matthews’ West Indies side begins on June 11, with subsequent matches on June 14 and 17. The T20I leg follows on June 20, 22 and 23, providing the Proteas Women with a comprehensive test in Caribbean conditions as they build towards the World Cup.
