The Sydney Sixers will head into the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) season with a major change in leadership. Charlotte Edwards, who had been at the helm for the past two seasons, officially stepped down from her role last month. Her departure comes after accepting the position of head coach for the England women’s national team — a role that aligns with her ongoing contributions to English cricket development.

Edwards’ tenure at the Sixers was marked by her deep understanding of the women’s game and her influence on developing a strong unit. Although the Sixers did not secure a title under her guidance, her presence laid the groundwork for a more competitive and united side.

Sydney Sixers announces the appointment of a new head coach

In a significant move, the Sixers have appointed former Australia women’s coach Matthew Mott as their new head coach for the next two WBBL seasons. The announcement was made on Friday, with the franchise confirming that Mott has signed a two-year contract. This marks Mott’s return to women’s cricket after a three-and-a-half-year hiatus since stepping down as Australia women’s coach.

While leading the Sixers women’s team, Mott will continue his existing role as assistant coach for the Sydney Sixers’ BBL men’s team under Greg Shipperd. General manager Rachel Haynes praised the appointment, stating that Mott brings a “world-class approach” and has the capability to “build a strong, winning culture” that can take the Sixers back to title contention.

Notably, the Sixers have not lifted the WBBL trophy since the 2017-18 season and finished sixth in the previous edition. Mott’s appointment is seen as a pivotal moment as the franchise looks to return to the top of the ladder.

New coach brings a wealth of experience back to women’s cricket

Mott is no stranger to success in women’s cricket. His previous stint as head coach of the Australian women’s team was immensely successful, guiding the team to two T20 World Cup titles (2018 and 2020) and a 50-over World Cup crown in 2022. Known for his strategic clarity and player-centric coaching methods, Mott is expected to make an immediate impact in the Sixers’ dressing room.

Currently in India serving as assistant coach for IPL side Delhi Capitals, Mott has become increasingly active in franchise cricket. He is also set to coach the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket this year, expanding his influence in the global T20 circuit.
