In what turned out to be a thrilling contest at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka registered a momentous three-wicket victory over India in the fourth match of the Sri Lanka Women’s Tri-Nation Series 2025. Chasing a challenging target of 276, the hosts showcased grit and composure to cross the line in 49.1 overs—sealing only their third-ever win over India in the history of Women’s ODIs. The joy in the Sri Lankan dugout reflected the magnitude of the achievement, especially after a heavy loss against India in the earlier game of the series.

India post a strong total despite middle-order wobble

Opting to bat first after Sri Lanka chose to bowl, India put up a competitive total of 275/9 in their 50 overs. Young batter Richa Ghosh played a standout knock, scoring a brisk 58 off 48 balls that included five boundaries and three sixes. She received valuable support from Jemimah Rodrigues (37), Pratika Rawal (35), and Harmanpreet Kaur (30), but India struggled to maintain momentum due to regular breakthroughs from the Sri Lankan bowlers. Chamari Athapaththu led from the front with the ball, bagging 3/43 in her 10 overs, while Sugandika Kumari also impressed with her 3/44.

Nilakshi de Silva and Harshitha Samarawickrama lead Sri Lanka’s historic win over India

Sri Lanka’s run chase started cautiously, with steady contributions from the top-order batters. Hasini Perera (22), Vishmi Rajapaksha (33), and skipper Athapaththu (23) set the tone, but it was the middle-order brilliance of Harshitha Samarawickrama (53) and Nilakshi de Silva (56 off just 33 balls) that turned the tide in favour of the hosts. Their calculated aggression and ability to rotate strike put pressure on the Indian bowlers.

Deepti Sharma and Shree Charani tried to contain the scoring, but lacked breakthroughs at crucial junctures. Sneh Rana was the pick of the bowlers with 3/45, but her effort wasn’t enough to stop the Sri Lankan charge. Anushka Sanjeewani (23) and Sugandika (19*) held their nerves in the end, steering the team past the finish line with five balls to spare.

This win marked just the third time Sri Lanka Women have defeated India Women in ODI cricket—a fact that underscores the significance of the result. With the final of the tri-series approaching, Sri Lanka have reignited the competition and sent out a clear message that they are not to be underestimated. India, who had comfortably won their previous two matches, will now be looking to regroup and correct their mistakes before the title clash.
