Delhi Capitals (DC) delivered a commanding performance on Saturday (March 1) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, defeating Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by nine wickets to become the first team to qualify for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 playoffs. The emphatic win not only confirmed DC’s dominance in the tournament but also set social media buzzing as their admin took a cheeky dig at RCB.

Social media banter heats up WPL 2025 rivalries

The banter between the two franchises began weeks ago when RCB had defeated DC in their earlier encounter, only for Delhi to exact revenge in the most ruthless manner possible. Following their victory, DC took to social media to troll RCB after the Bengaluru-based franchise deleted an old tweet from their previous match.

In the earlier game on February 17 at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara, RCB had beaten DC by eight wickets, prompting their admin to mock Delhi with an “Uno Reverse” response to DC’s pre-match confidence. However, after DC avenged their defeat in the reverse fixture, RCB quickly deleted their tweet, seemingly trying to erase their earlier boast. DC’s social media admin was quick to catch on, posting a screenshot of the deleted tweet and replying with a sarcastic, “Tweet deleted?” The post instantly went viral, garnering numerous views within hours, while RCB’s admin remained silent on the matter.

Delhi Capitals’ commanding performance leaves RCB reeling

Delhi’s dominant performance on the field was as ruthless as their social media comeback. After winning the toss, RCB opted to bat first and set a target of 147/5 in 20 overs, with Ellyse Perry anchoring the innings. However, RCB’s batting lineup failed to capitalize on a strong start, as DC’s disciplined bowling attack kept the scoring rate in check. Despite some resistance from Perry and Richa Ghosh, RCB could not post a formidable total, leaving them vulnerable against DC’s powerful batting lineup.

Shafali Verma then took center stage in the chase, blazing her way to an unbeaten 80 off just 48 balls, smashing 11 fours and 3 sixes. She was ably supported by captain Meg Lanning, who played a steady knock of 43 runs not out, ensuring that Delhi cruised to victory in just 15.3 overs with nine wickets in hand. The emphatic win not only solidified DC’s position at the top of the table but also exposed RCB’s struggles, as they succumbed to their fourth consecutive home defeat at at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

RCB’s playoff hopes hang by a thread after four consecutive home defeats

The defending champions, who started their WPL 2025 campaign with two back-to-back wins in Vadodara, have since faced a disastrous run at home. Their four-match losing streak has now pushed them to fourth place in the points table, making their playoff chances highly uncertain. With just two matches left in the league stage, RCB’s path to the playoffs is now hanging by a thread, and their qualification depends on their ability to bounce back with strong performances in their remaining games.

RCB will next face UP Warriorz on March 8 in Lucknow, followed by a crucial clash against Mumbai Indians (MI) on March 11 in Delhi. They now must win both matches convincingly to keep their playoff hopes alive. Even if they secure victories, their qualification may still depend on the net run rate and the performances of other teams, adding immense pressure on Smriti Mandhana and her squad. With their form dipping at the worst possible time, RCB’s road ahead looks extremely challenging.
