On Wednesday, November 27, during the Women’s Big Bash League 2024 (WBBL) knockout match between Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes at Drummoyne Oval in Sydney, an unusual dismissal by Sydney Thunder’s bowler Shabnim Ismail of Hobart Hurrican’s opener Ruth Johnston captured attention.

The unexpected dismissal of Ruth Johnston

In the third over of the Hurricanes’ innings, opener Johnston was dismissed in a rare and unexpected manner. Facing Ismail’s right-arm medium-fast delivery, Johnston attempted a pull shot but failed to connect properly. The ball nicked the edge of her bat and ballooned straight up into the air, hovering over the crease. While Johnston, seemingly unaware of the ball’s trajectory, focused on attempting a single, her partner Lizelle Lee denied the run. Before Johnston could retreat safely, the ball descended from its lofty arc and crashed into the stumps, dismissing her for 5 runs off 6 balls, including one boundary. The bizarre dismissal added to the drama early in the match.

Sydney Thunder chases target with confidence

After electing to bat first, the Hobart Hurricanes managed to post a total of 126 runs for the loss of six wickets. Captain Elyse Villani stood out with a valiant knock of 53 runs, anchoring the innings amidst consistent breakthroughs from the Sydney Thunder bowlers. However, the rest of the batting lineup struggled to gain momentum against a disciplined bowling attack.

In response, Sydney Thunder showcased a composed chase, achieving the target of 127 runs with six wickets in hand. Captain Phoebe Litchfield led from the front with a crucial innings of 46 runs, earning her the Player of the Match title. Contributions from the rest of the batting order ensured the Thunder reached the target in style now the Thunders are set to face the Brisbane Heat in the Challenger match, scheduled for November 29 in Brisbane.
