The 34th match of the Women’s Big Bash League 2024 (WBBL) between Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers on Thursday (November 21) delivered a nail-biting thriller that ended in an unprecedented tie even after a Super Over. At the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, both teams showcased incredible resilience, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

Ellyse Perry’s lone battle in the Sixers’ chase

After opting to bat first, Perth Scorchers bundled out for 126 in 19.2 overs. The foundation of their innings was laid by wicket-keeper batter Beth Mooney, who crafted a patient 44 off 37 balls, including four boundaries. Brooke Halliday also contributed significantly, scoring a brisk 41 off 32 deliveries, decorated with four fours and a six. However, the Scorchers struggled against the Sixers’ disciplined bowling attack. Off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner was the standout performer, claiming 4 wickets in her 4-over spell. Medium-pacer Courtney Sippel chipped in with two wickets in her 2.2 overs to wrap up the Scorchers’ innings.

Chasing 127, the Sydney Sixers found themselves in a precarious position after early setbacks. However, skipper Ellyse Perry stood tall, anchoring the innings with a sublime 67 off 53 balls, laced with eight boundaries. Despite her valiant effort, the Sixers fell short of clinching the victory as they finished on 126/7 in 20 overs, tying the match. For the Scorchers, leg-spinner Alana King delivered a remarkable spell, taking 3 crucial wickets in her 4 overs, keeping her team in the contest.

The thrilling Super Over

In the Super Over, Sydney Sixers batted first, with Perry once again leading the charge. Her unbeaten 12 off 5 balls, including a four and a six, propelled the Sixers to 15 runs, setting a target of 16 for the Scorchers.

The Scorchers responded with Mikayla Hinkley’s fiery 14* off 4 balls, smashing three boundaries. Despite their efforts, they too managed 15 runs, resulting in a tie. Both teams shared a point each, with Perth Scorchers now sitting 4th on the table and the Sixers at 6th. Perry was rightfully named Player of the Match for her exceptional batting under pressure.
