The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024 delivered another exciting clash as Hobart Hurricanes faced Melbourne Renegades in Match 35 at the picturesque Bellerive Oval. The match saw standout performances from Georgia Wareham, and an all-round disciplined performance from the Renegades, which helped them claim a 22-run victory.

Georgia Wareham takes Melbourne Renegades to a competitive total

Electing to bat first, Melbourne Renegades posted a decent total of 150/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Wareham was the standout performer with the bat, smashing an aggressive 69 off 45 balls, including six boundaries and three sixes. She was well-supported by Naomi Stalenberg, who contributed a steady 36 off 32 balls. While the Hurricanes’ bowlers applied early pressure, Wareham’s counterattack in the middle overs tilted the momentum. Nicola Carey was the pick of the bowlers for Hobart, claiming 3 wickets for 26 runs in her 4 overs.

Hobart Hurricanes stumble in the chase

In response, the Hurricanes faced an uphill battle and managed only 128/8 in their 20 overs. Elyse Villani anchored the innings with 36 off 35 balls, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled to build partnerships. Chloe Tryon added a quick 24 off 18 balls, and Kathryn Bryce showed some late resistance with 16 off 11, but the target proved too steep.

Milly Illingworth led the Renegades’ bowling attack with a brilliant spell, conceding just 13 runs in her 4 overs and picking up a crucial wicket. Sophie Molineux also shone with figures of 2/26 in her full quota. The disciplined bowling performance ensured that the Hurricanes never gained the required momentum.
