During the 34th match of the Women’s Big Bash League 2024 (WBBL), Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Thursday, (November 21), Sydney Sixers’ star spinner Ashleigh Gardner delivered a game-changing moment against Perth Scorchers as the fans witnessed a thrilling super over where Gardner’s athleticism and sharp reflexes dismissed Scorchers opener Beth Mooney.

Ashleigh Gardner’s exceptional caught and bowled dismissal

On the second ball of the Scorchers’ super over, Gardner bowled to Mooney, who attempted to make a shot straight off the ground. Reacting with lightning speed, Gardner bent to her knees and scooped up the ball mere inches from the ground, completing a stunning caught-and-bowled dismissal. This spectacular effort sent Mooney back to the pavilion for a golden duck (0 off 1 ball). Mooney had been the top scorer during Scorchers’ main innings with a crucial 44 runs, making her early dismissal in the super over even more significant.

Gardner’s exceptional performance didn’t stop there. She emerged as the standout bowler of the match, claiming four wickets in her allotted four overs during the main game. Including her super-over heroics, she tallied an impressive five wickets for the match, cementing her role as a match-winner for the Sixers.

A nail-biting Super Over showdown

Earlier, the Perth Scorchers, after opting to bat, were bowled out for 126 in 19.2 overs. The Sydney Sixers faced early setbacks in their chase but found stability through captain Ellyse Perry’s brilliant knock of 67 runs off 53 balls, featuring eight boundaries. Despite Perry’s efforts, the Sixers finished on 126/7 in their 20 overs, forcing the game into a super over.

In the first innings of the super over, the Sydney Sixers scored 15 runs, setting a competitive target of 16 for the Scorchers. The Scorchers responded with Mikayla Hinkley’s fiery knock of 14* off 4 balls, including three boundaries. However, their efforts only managed to tie the super over score at 15 runs, leading to another draw and underscoring the intense competitiveness of the match.
