In a Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024 match, Indian cricketer Shikha Pandey made headlines by dismissing her fellow countrywoman Smriti Mandhana during the left handed batter’s debut for the Adelaide Strikers. The match took place against the Brisbane Heat, where expectations were sky-high for Mandhana, who has been a standout performer in women’s cricket. However, her debut turned out to be a challenging one, as she managed to score only 6 runs before falling to Shikha’s exceptional bowling.
Shikha Pandey sets up Smriti Mandhana’s dismissal
Mandhana’s arrival at the Strikers was met with excitement, given her stellar track record in the WBBL. Having played for multiple teams, including Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder, she was expected to be a game-changer for the struggling Strikers. Unfortunately, her innings started brightly with a boundary off Shikha but quickly turned sour when she misjudged a fuller length delivery that led to a caught and bowled dismissal. Shikha showcased her skills with a brilliant reflex catch, leaving Mandhana visibly disappointed as she walked back to the pavilion.

Mandhana’s form coils a concerning picture
This dismissal adds to what has been a topsy-turvy period for Mandhana. After an average performance in the T20 Women’s World Cup and struggles in recent ODI matches against New Zealand, many hoped she would find her form in the WBBL. Although she rebounded with a century in ODIs prior to her WBBL debut, the pressure was palpable as she stepped onto the field against a formidable Brisbane Heat side.
Adelaide Strikers’ struggles continue
The Adelaide Strikers have had a rocky start to the season, languishing at the bottom of the points table with only one win out of four matches. With their loss against Brisbane Heat looming large after losing three wickets early in their innings, the team desperately needed Mandhana’s experience and skill to turn their fortunes around but Strikers eventually ended up once again on the losing side. The stakes were high as they sought to reclaim their position as defending champions.
