During the sixth match of the Women’s Big Bash League 2024, Melbourne Renegades captain Sophie Molineux showcased her athletic prowess by pulling off a stunning catch to dismiss Brisbane Heat’s Lauren Winfield-Hill. The eye-catching play took place in the ninth over of the first innings, as Brisbane Heat aimed to set a challenging total.
Sophie Molineux take a brilliant catch
The decisive moment came when Georgia Wareham bowled to Winfield-Hill, who attempted an aggressive shot aimed at clearing the boundary. However, her shot didn’t go as planned, and instead, it soared towards mid-wicket where Molineux was positioned. Though she initially fumbled, Molineux maintained her focus, juggled the ball, and secured it on her second attempt. This catch proved crucial as it removed the aggressive Winfield-Hill, who had scored a quickfire 24 off 19 balls, including three boundaries.

Batting first, Brisbane Heat put up an impressive total of 169 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Georgia Redmayne led the Heat’s batting charge, scoring a solid 44 off 39 balls, hitting seven boundaries. The Renegades’ bowlers worked hard to restrict Brisbane, with Sophie Molineux and Hayley Matthews each claiming two wickets to keep the run rate under control.
In response, Melbourne Renegades struggled to match Brisbane’s scoring pace and managed to put up 141 for the loss of nine wickets, ultimately falling short by 28 runs. Naomi Stalenberg led the resistance, scoring 38 off 23 balls with four boundaries and a six, but the Renegades failed to gain enough momentum to reach the target.
Brisbane’s Grace Parsons emerged as the standout bowler, taking three wickets for just 22 runs in her four-over spell. Her economy of 5.50, combined with her precision in crucial moments, earned her the Player of the Match award. Parsons’ efforts helped Brisbane secure a strong victory and highlighted her as a key player in the league.
