Former Indian cricketer Mithali Raj has voiced her concerns over Team India following their early exit from the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. With the Indian team failing to advance to the semifinals, Mithali has emphasized the need for leadership changes ahead of the future tournaments.

Mithali Raj urges leadership overhaul after India’s early exit

Mithali Raj suggested that if the selectors choose to make a leadership change, they should appoint a younger captain now rather than later, with the ODI World Cup approaching next year. She mentioned that delaying the decision would make it too close to the World Cup. While Smriti Mandhana is an option, Mithali favoured Jemimah Rodrigues, highlighting her age and potential to serve the team longer.

“If the selectors decide to make a change, I would go for a young captain. This is the time, if you delay further, we have another World Cup on the horizon. If you’re not doing it now, then don’t do it later—it will be too close to the World Cup. Smriti is an option, but I think someone like Jemimah – she’s 24, she’s young, and she will serve you longer,” the former Indian captain said while talking to PTI.

Inconsistent performance ends India’s World Cup hopes

India’s campaign in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup was marred by inconsistency. Although they secured two victories in their four group-stage matches, big defeat against New Zealand and a 9-run loss to Australia in the final game ended their hopes of reaching the semi-finals. Australia’s narrow win dashed India’s chances, leaving the team and fans disappointed.

Harmanpreet Kaur, who has been leading the team for several years, faced criticism for the team’s underwhelming performance. Despite high expectations, India’s journey in the tournament ended abruptly.

Looking ahead, the Indian team will now shift their focus to a three-match ODI series against New Zealand, beginning on October 24. The series presents an opportunity for India to regroup and rebuild after their World Cup exit.
