In a surprising turn of events, Zimbabwe have thrown the hat into the ring to host the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the southern African nation has emerged as a potential alternative after the initial host, Bangladesh, encountered political instability and security concerns that jeopardized its ability to successfully stage the tournament.

Notably, it was expected that India might show some interest to host the event but recently BCCI declined the ICC’s offer to host the muti-team tournament. Citing the ongoing monsoon season and the country’s commitment to hosting the Women’s ODI World Cup the following year, the BCCI had opted out of hosting the tournament.

Zimbabwe’s cricket hosting record

Zimbabwe’s bid to host the prestigious event is built on a foundation of recent successes in managing international cricket matches. The country has successfully hosted the ODI World Cup Qualifiers in 2018 and 2023, demonstrating its capabilities in organizing large-scale sporting events. Furthermore, Zimbabwe has secured the co-hosting rights for the 2026 Under-19 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup, solidifying its position as a rising star on the global cricket map.

A favorable bid

Zimbabwe offers a compelling case for hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup. The country boasts favorable weather conditions for cricket during the tournament period, and its stadiums are equipped to host international matches. Additionally, Zimbabwe Cricket is confident in its ability to deliver a world-class experience for players, officials, and fans alike.

A boost for Women’s cricket

While Zimbabwe presents a strong case, the ICC will undoubtedly consider other potential hosts, including the UAE, which has also expressed interest in staging the tournament. The final decision rests with the governing body, and the cricket world eagerly awaits the announcement of the host nation.

If Zimbabwe are selected, they will undoubtedly provide a significant boost to women’s cricket in the country and the region. The tournament would offer a platform to showcase the talent of Zimbabwean women cricketers and inspire a new generation of players. Moreover, it would contribute to the overall development of cricket infrastructure and facilities in the country.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the ICC to make a timely decision that ensures the smooth running of the Women’s T20 World Cup. Regardless of the chosen host, the tournament promises to be a thrilling spectacle for cricket fans around the world.
