South Africa recently hosted Sri Lanka in the second Women’s ODI at Diamond Oval in Kimberley. The clash saw a clinical performance from the Proteas Women, who emerged victorious by 7 wickets. Notably, the opening WODI produced no result due to rain.

Chamari Athapaththu guides Sri Lanka to a respectable total

Electing to bat first, Sri Lanka Women got off to a shaky start, losing opener Vishmi Rajapaksha Gunaratne early. However, Chamari Athapaththu (51 runs) and Nilakshi de Silva (36 runs) steadied the ship with a gritty partnership. Contributions from Hasini Perera (15 runs) and Kavisha Dilhari (42 runs) helped Sri Lanka post a respectable total of 229 runs on the board, losing all their wickets in 49.5 overs.

Ayabonga Khaka (3 wickets for 28 runs) and Nadine de Klerk (3 wickets for 23 runs) were the pick of the South African bowlers, keeping the Sri Lankan batters in check.

Laura Wolvaardt, Marizanne Kapp star in dominant South African chase

In reply, South Africa Women got off to a flying start with Laura Wolvaardt anchoring the chase with a magnificent century (110 runs off 141 balls). Wolvaardt found able support from Marizanne Kapp (80 runs off 84 balls) as the duo stitched together a crucial 158-run partnership for the third wicket, effectively sealing the match for the Proteas Women.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers struggled to contain the South African batters, with Achini Kulasuriya (1 wicket for 35 runs) being the only bowler to find any success.

South Africa Women chased down the target with 2.2 overs to spare, losing only 3 wickets. Wolvaardt, for her game-changing knock, was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match. This convincing victory gives South Africa Women a 1-0 lead in the ODI series, with one match remaining.
