In a significant move, Cricket Australia (CA) has unveiled the new captain and vice-captain for the Women’s cricket team across all formats. The announcement comes after the sudden retirement of former captain Meg Lanning earlier this month.
Veteran cricketer takes charge as captain
Experienced wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy has been appointed as the new captain of the Australian Women’s cricket team. Healy, with over 250 international appearances, is no stranger to the leadership role, having led the team on an interim basis for recent series against England, Ireland, and the West Indies.
Star all-rounder named vice-captain
Tahila McGrath has been entrusted with the responsibilities of vice-captaincy. McGrath, who has previously captained the team in the absence of Healy, recently led the Adelaide Strikers to back-to-back titles in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
Leadership experience on display
Both Healy and McGrath will showcase their leadership skills in the upcoming tour of India, which includes a one-off four-day Test, three ODIs, and as many T20Is. Their experience in leading the team in different situations is expected to bring stability to the side.
Healy has been a pivotal figure in Australia’s success over the past 14 years, contributing to victories in six T20 World Cup campaigns, the 2022 Cricket World Cup, and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. With an impressive track record, Healy aims to continue the team’s success while bringing her unique style to the captaincy.

Vision for the role
In an official statement, Healy expressed her honor in accepting the role of captain and conveyed gratitude for the support from her teammates. She acknowledged the differences in leadership style between her and Lanning, vowing to maintain consistency in her approach while adding her personal touch to the role.
“I am honoured to accept the role of captain and am grateful for the opportunity to lead our team. I’ve really enjoyed the support of the players over the past few months and their encouragement to continue to be who I am and lead the group like I normally would from within,” said Healy in a official statement.
“I’m obviously very different to Meg, I’m not her, I’m a very different style of leader as well … Meg is really good at leading from the front and really pulling everyone along with her. My approach will remain consistent to what it has been previously, but I’ll make my own mark on the role and be sure that I’m doing the best I possibly can for this group to maintain the success that we’ve had,” she added.
