The excitement is building as the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2023 is just around the corner, with the opening game scheduled for October 19. While cricket fans eagerly await the action to kick off, the Sydney Thunder has made a significant announcement by appointing a new captain to lead their team in the upcoming season.

The Sydney Thunder, who finished at the bottom of the WBBL standings last season under the leadership of Rachael Haynes, are looking to turn things around with a fresh approach. The team has appointed England’s star all-rounder, Heather Knight, as their new captain.

Haynes, who led the Thunder last season, has retired from the format, leaving a void in the captaincy role. Thunder’s management was quick to find a suitable replacement in Heather Knight, who brings a wealth of experience to the team.

Reunion of Knight and Keightley

Sydney Thunder made significant moves in the draft last month, securing the services of South Africa’s dynamic all-rounder, Marizanne Kapp, and England’s talented pacer, Lauren Bell, alongside Knight. These international signings are expected to bolster the team’s performance in the upcoming season.

Knight will not be a stranger to the Thunder’s setup, as she previously played a vital role in the team’s success in the 2020-21 season when they clinched the title. In that season, Knight was the leading run-scorer for Thunder, amassing 446 runs at an impressive average of 40.54 and a strike-rate of 124.92.

Moreover, Knight will be reuniting with former England coach Lisa Keightley, who is now in charge of the Sydney Thunder, replacing Trevor Griffin. This reunion is expected to bring a strong and experienced leadership dynamic to the team.

Sydney Thunder will commence their WBBL campaign with a highly anticipated clash against the Sydney Sixers at North Sydney Oval on October 22. With Knight at the helm and a formidable squad at their disposal, the Thunder aims to make a strong statement in the Women’s Big Bash League 2023.
