The Barbados Royals Women and Guyana Amazon Warriors Women met in the first match of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) 2023 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. Guyana Amazon Warriors emerged victorious in the contest by six wickets, starting their campaign on a high note.
Sophie Devine hammers a brilliant century for Guyana Amazon Warriors
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Guyana Amazon Warriors posted a challenging total of 166/2 in their allotted 20 overs. Sophie Devine scored a brilliant 103 runs off 64 balls for her side, supported by ten fours and five sixes. Suzie Bates (23 runs) and Stafanie Taylor (22 runs) also contributed with the bat. Qiana Joseph and Amanda-Jade Wellington were the only wicket-taking bowlers for the Barbados Royals.

Barbados Royals successfully chase down the set target
In reply, the Barbados Royals got off to a good start as well. Hayley Matthews (23 runs) and Gaby Lewis (47 runs) put on an impressive partnership for their team. Laura Harris then came in and smashed a quickfire 30 runs off 12 balls to help Barbados Royals win the match with five wickets and 2 balls to spare.
Although Guyana Amazon lost the contest, Devine was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for her sensational century. Devine also became the first women’s batter and the second New Zealander in as many days to hit a CPL century after Martin Guptill’s unbeaten 103 from 64 balls.
With the win in the opening match, Barbados Royals will now approach their upcoming fixture in confidence. On the other hand, Guyana Amazon Warriors will look to bounce back and work on their shortcomings ahead of their next game.
