Alyssa Healy, the stand-in captain of Australia, has provided an update on the potential return of regular skipper Meg Lanning for the upcoming home series against West Indies.

Lanning had taken an indefinite break from cricket due to medical reasons, causing her to miss the women’s Ashes tour of England and subsequent fixtures against Ireland.

Lanning’s absence was notable, considering her pivotal role in the team. She had also taken a six-month break last year before making a comeback against Pakistan earlier this year. The uncertainty around her availability has left fans and the team eagerly awaiting her return.

Healy, speaking to foxsports.com.au, shared her thoughts on Lanning’s progress, stating, “I’ve spoken to her (Lanning) in bits and pieces, but I obviously left her alone during the Ashes because it would have been tough for her to watch. I haven’t seen her just yet, but from all reports she’s going really well and I look forward to hopefully seeing her back in Aussie colours in October against the Windies.”

Alyssa Healy content to return captaincy duties to Meg Lanning

Healy, who has been leading the team in Lanning’s absence, acknowledged the challenges Lanning faced during the Ashes but expressed optimism about her recovery.

While it remains unclear whether Lanning will immediately resume captaincy duties upon her return, Healy is more than willing to step aside and contribute as a senior player. Healy emphasized Lanning’s role as the Australian women’s cricket team captain, indicating her support for Lanning’s potential return to leadership.

“Meg is the captain of the Australian women’s cricket team, and I’m fully aware of that fact. I’ve just been doing my job as best as I can for the group, but that’s a decision and a conversation for Meg to have. We want her to be fit and firing first and foremost, and if that means coming back and taking charge of the team, then I’ll happily step aside and support her in the best way I know how,” added Healy.

The cricket community eagerly awaits Lanning’s comeback, and her potential return to the captaincy role will likely play a crucial part in the team’s dynamics as they gear up to face West Indies in three T20Is and three ODIs on the east coast in October.
