Women’s Ashes 2023 one-off Test sets the record for highest viewership in Women’s Test history

The Women’s Ashes 2023 one-off Test between England and Australia at the Trent Bridge concluded on June 26, with Australia emerging victorious in the contest by 89 runs. It is worth mentioning that this was the first time the Women’s Ashes Test took place in a five-day format.

The Trent Bridge Test turned out to be very eventful and witnessed many exceptional performances from players of both sides. The match even saw certain historic feats getting accomplished by a few players. For instance, England’s Tammy Beaumont became the first English and overall eighth batter to smash a double ton in the longest format. Beaumont’s compatriot Sophie Ecclestone (10/192) and Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner (12/165) also etched their name into the record books by taking ten-wicket hauls in the match.

Apart from the batting and bowling performances, one more record was set during the only Women’s Ashes 2023 Test, and that was of highest viewership ever for the Women’s Test match.

According to Sky Sports, it saw a peak audience of 480k on Sunday (June 25), the highest viewing ever for the Women’s Ashes across all formats. At the same time, the thrilling day five of the game witnessed a peak of 239k viewers.

The Managing Director of Sky Sports, Jonathan Licht, expressed his excitement over the achievement and acknowledged the power-packed performance of Beaumont as game-changing for sport.

“We’re thrilled to see further records broken on Sky Sports following such an exciting start to the Ashes for the England Women’s team, and with the record-breaking performance on the pitch from Tammy Beaumont, the women’s game looks to be stronger than ever,” said Jonathan.

Tony Singh, Chief Commercial Officer at the ECB, thanked the audience as well and said: “It was fitting that the five-day LV= Insurance Test went down to the final day, and it’s fantastic that so many people wanted to be a part of the action, whether watching in the stands, on Sky, or listening on radio or online.”
