The first-ever edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) was a major hit globally and attracted a huge viewership from across the world. The league featured many prominent female cricketers and also witnessed several breathtaking performances from various athletes.
Recently talking about the success and impact of WPL on the Breakfast with Champions YouTube show, India’s star cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues recalled an incident when she ended up eavesdropping on a random boy’s conversation about WPL on the streets of Mumbai.
Jemimah revealed how once she went out for an ice cream with her Delhi Capitals‘ (DC) teammate Tara Norris donning a hoodie and heard a boy praising the women cricketers for their great performances while she stood in the queue.
“One more interesting story. I was taking one overseas player, Tara Norris to have ice-cream. Like, let’s make her eat ice-cream. So, I went in a hoodie and all that and standing in the line. So then one guy was like, ‘Hey, are you aware that WPL is going to start?’ I suddenly became curious, he had no clue that I am standing there in the line. He is like right here. So, I wanted to hear what does he say. He says, Kya solid khelte hai yaar ye ladki log (Man, these girls play so well).” said Jemimah.
“And I was like, what a moment, what a moment. It’s honest, it’s not like you meet people, they will sometimes say just to say it. I said no ice-cream needed now, this is enough,” she added.
Notably, Jemimah was bought by the Delhi-based franchise for a whopping 2.2 crore in the WPL players’ auction. Speaking of DC’s performance in the league, they finished as the first runner-up of the inaugural tournament after getting defeated by the eventual champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in the final.
