The DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai hosted a thrilling encounter between UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants in the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 on Sunday. The Warriorz got the better off Giants to open their account in the 20-over showpiece event.
After opting to bat first, the Gujarat side posted 169/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Harleen Deol was the top scorer for Gujarat Giants, scoring 46 off 32 balls, including seven boundaries. Ashleigh Gardner also contributed 25 runs off 19 balls with two fours and a six. For the Warriorz, Sophie Ecclestone (2/25) and Deepti Sharma (2/27) took two wickets each.
In response, the contest went down to the wire, where the Alyssa Healy-led team managed to chase down the target with three wickets in hand and one ball to spare. Kiran Navgire held the innings together, scoring a crucial 53 off 43 balls, including five fours and two sixes. However, the Warriorz kept losing wickets and were reduced to 105/7 in 15.4 overs.
As the contest was slipping out from Warriorz’ reach, Grace Harris turned the game around and took her side over the finish line. Harris played an outstanding innings, staying unbeaten on 59 off just 26 balls, which included seven boundaries and three sixes. Kim Garth was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat Giants, taking five wickets for 36 runs. However, her efforts were not enough to prevent UP Warriorz from winning the match.
“Full credit to Grace and our lower-order in particular. Grace is Grace. That’s the only way to describe it. She’s got the ability to strike the ball like she did. Kiran was sensational. If we lost an early wicket, we were going to send her in for a whack. She was great tonight,” said UP skipper Healy after the game.
