Australia have been crowned champions for the record sixth time in the history of Women’s T20 World Cup. They defeated hosts South Africa in the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup final by 19 runs.
After winning the toss, Australia skipper Meg Lanning elected to bat first at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town.
Opening batter Beth Mooney anchored the Australian innings with an unbeaten 74. The Aussies eventually finished on 156-6 in their stipulated 20 overs. For South Africa, Shabnim Ismail (2/26) and Marizanne Kapp (2/35) took two wickets each.
Chasing 157 for victory, the Proteas side made a slow start, losing the wicket of inform batter Tazmin Brits (10) and all-rounder Kapp (11) inside the first 9 overs. But, Laura Wolvaardt (61) held one end and went on her complete her half-century. She also added a 55-run stand for the fifth wicket with Chloe Tryon (25).
However, the rise in required run-rate lead to the dismissal of Wolvaardt. The Women in Yellow finally restricted the Green Team to 137-6 and completed their second hat-trick of T20 World Cup titles.
Mooney was declared ‘Player of the Match’ for brilliant batting display.
Meanwhile, Australia have now lifted the coveted trophy in the year 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020 and 2023.
“Pretty special effort from the group. We knew teams will come hard at us, so super proud. Our powerplay with the ball was excellent, that really set the tone. We got some good experience with the group,” said the winning captain Lanning at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“Enjoyed our time in South Africa. Amazing tournament. It’s a special group. Not just the players, the support stafff too. Thank you very much to everyone, family and friends. All the support from back home and here, it’s been amazing,” she added.
