India opener Smriti Mandhana, Australia all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner and England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt broke the bank in the players’ auction for the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL), starting next month in Mumbai.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spent INR 3.40 crore to acquire the services of left-handed batter Mandhana, making her the costliest buy of the season.

Gardner joined Gujarat Giants for INR 3.20 crore. She shared the WPL’s most expensive overseas player’s honour with Nat Sciver, the Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2022, who was roped in by Mumbai Indians for the same amount.

India’s top-ranked all-rounder Deepti Sharma was UP Warriorz first buy at the auction as she was signed up for INR 1.8 crore.

The WPL 2023 is scheduled to begin on March 4. A total of 22 matches will be played at two venues – Brabourne Stadium (Mumbai) and DY Patil Stadium (Navi Mumbai).
