In the 5th match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, Bangladesh faced Sri Lanka at the Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday, February 13.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first, but could only post 126-8 on the scoreboard in their stipulated overs. Oshadi Ranasinghe was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka with 3 wickets for 23 runs, while captain Chamari Athapaththu took 2 wickets for 19 runs.

The Bangladesh innings was characterized by a lack of substantial partnerships, with only two batters crossing the 20-run mark.

In reply, Sri Lanka got off to a solid start with opener Harshitha Madavi leading the charge. Madavi was in fine form, scoring an unbeaten 69 runs off 50 balls, hitting 8 fours and 1 six. She was ably supported by Nilakshi de Silva who chipped in with 41 not out off 38 deliveries. The duo put on an unbroken stand of 104 runs for the fourth wicket, taking the game away from Bangladesh.

Despite the best efforts of Bangladesh’s Marufa Akter, who took 3 wickets for 23 runs, Sri Lanka successfully chased down the target, winning the match by 7 wickets with 10 balls to spare.

Madavi was named the Player of the Match for her scintillating knock with the bat.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 126-8 in 20 overs (Sobhana Mostary 29; Oshadi Ranasinghe 3/23) lost to Sri Lanka 129/3 in 18.2 overs (Harshitha Madavi 69 not out, Nilakshi de Silva 41 not out; Marufa Akter 3/23) by 7 wickets.
