The Women’s Tri Series Final match between South Africa and India took place at Buffalo Park in East London on Thursday. The contest was expected to be a cracker of a game, but it turned out to be a one-sided affair where the hosts easily chased down the paltry target of 110 and registered a 5-wicket triumph.

Batting first, India started badly, losing star opener Smriti Mandhana for an 8-ball duck in the second over. Soon, her partner, Jemimah Rodrigues, also lost her wicket for 11 as the Women in Blue were reduced to 21/2 in the powerplay.

Harleen Deol and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur then took charge and steadied the ship. The duo added 48 runs for the third wicket and were looking set to cruise through. But Proteas captain Sune Luus broke the stand by removing her counterpart Harmanpreet for 21. Deol took the team’s total beyond the mark of 100 before getting dismissed for 46 off 56 with the help of 4 fours.

The Indian batting unit could not put up a big total, as they were restricted to 109/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Nonkululeko Mlaba was the standout bowler for South Africa, picking up two wickets for just 16 runs in her quota of 4 overs.

Chasing 110, South Africa also had a terrible start, losing half of their side for 66 in 13.1 overs. Before India could hope to bounce back, all-rounder Chloe Tryon came up with a counterattack and smashed a quickfire half-century to derail India’s whatever left chances. Tryon scored an unbeaten 57 from 32 deliveries, including 6 fours and a couple of sixes, as the home team won the match by five wickets.

Tryon’s outstanding performance with the bat earned her the Player of the Match award. On the other hand, Deepti Sharma was named Player of the Series for her impressive performances with the ball throughout the tournament.

“The bowlers did well up front, and I am happy that I could take my team over the line today. Going into the T20 World Cup, we are confident. Playing at home is exciting,” said Tryon at the post-match presentation.
