England have named their 15-player squad for the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, set to be hosted by South Africa in February.
Heather Knight will captain the English team, which is placed in Group B with India, Pakistan, West Indies and Ireland and Pakistan.
Charlie Dean, a 22-year-old mainstay of England’s ODI team for the past 15 months, has retained her place in the T20I squad. She took 18 wickets in last month’s ODI and T20I matches against West Indies. Dean bowled an economy rate of 4.64 in the West Indies T20Is, showing her ability to restrict the opposition batters.
Another inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad is of young sensation Alice Capsey, who is recovering from a broken collarbone suffered on a tour of the Caribbean. Despite the injury, she has worked hard with the medical staff and has been given the chance to participate in the ICC event.
The depth of talent in England Cricket is unthinkable, and the team hopes to embrace the challenge of the global tournament and enjoy the journey.
“It’s always exciting to name a World Cup squad, and there’s a great deal of talent in this group. We saw a lot of good things in the West Indies, a lot of progress around shifting our mindset as a team, and I’m excited to see how we take that into the challenge of a global tournament,” said coach Jon Lewis, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
“We hope Alice is fit enough, she’s worked incredibly hard alongside the medical staff to get to this point and we’ll give her every chance, but as we saw in the Caribbean the depth of talent and skill in the squad is growing fast and winning tournaments is about everyone collectively embracing the moment and enjoying the journey,” he added.
